ABOUT US

What started in 2006 as an informal network of friends and families coming together in support of Lakota families in need, has since expanded to officially become The GATHERING THUNDER FOUNDATION.  Annual donations of clothing, food, propane, and household supplies have been delivered each winter for the Porcupine District of the Pine Ridge Reservation of South Dakota. 2009 marked the official 501(c)(3) non-profit status for The Gathering Thunder Foundation, located in Rockford, MI.  Our mission is to assist in the preservation of Native American culture and the sacred traditions of the indigenous first people of North America. Our vision is to expand outward in the future to other tribal reservations in need of community help and support.

Through the dedication and generosity of many volunteers working with tribal community leaders, a variety of programs and fund raising efforts continue to be implemented which support the mission of The Gathering Thunder Foundation.  Programs have been set up to assist families in paying for heat and electric expenses, transportation, fuel supplies and fundraising toward a community center in the Porcupine District.  In the past, many would lose these services because of their inability to pay. As temperatures frequently reach below zero, lack of adequate heating during the winter months puts the lives of many Lakota people at risk. Many homes are not equipped to provide adequate protection from the cold. In fact, it is not uncommon for homes to be without electricity, insulation, flooring, or windows. Survival of the elderly and the young children they care for often depend on the support of these outside programs. Statistics continue to report the high unemployment on the Pine Ridge Reservation .

Our deep gratitude to our supporters and generous contributors to the mission of the
Gathering Thunder Foundation.
