The Mission of the Gathering Thunder Foundation is the Alleviation of Poverty and the preservation of the Native American Culture and Sacred Traditions of the Indigenous First People of North America.
Welcome to the Gathering Thunder Foundation
The Gathering Thunder Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization working to support the Lakota people located in the Porcupine District of the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota.
Our efforts are focused on helping residents meet basic needs through various programs and annual delivery of goods, as well as support of educational programs promoting language and way of life. One key area is assisting those who would otherwise loose their services due to inability to pay. Lack of heat during winter months is a risk to the lives of many Lakota people and as winter temperatures frequently fall below zero, heat and electricity is critical to survival. With unemployment in some areas of the Pine Ridge Reservation above 86%, the Gathering Thunder Foundation assists those forced to choose between buying propane and paying electric payments or buying food. With third-world conditions to which the Lakota people are subjected, their basic living status is desperate. A critical need in the Porcupine District is a building which will serve as a center for the community.
Our current focus is to work along side the Lakota people and within the structure of the Tribal Council to build a Community Life Center, to be located in the Porcupine District of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota. Our aim is to gather support and necessary funding to build and sustain the desperately needed center, which will enable community leaders to provide education sustaining Lakota language and cultural spirituality as well as reserving a place of shelter. Programs at the center will include providing medical care, family and substance abuse counseling, suicide prevention and talking circles. With the increasing influence of western society and pressures for assimilation, the native language is becoming endangered. It is our hope that by providing a safe and inviting space, community members will be able to join together in the preservation of traditions and language.
We are currently working with the Tribal Council on the building site and with architects and engineers who have volunteered their time and service to design and build the center.
